One of the major issues Bay Area teachers face is trying to afford a place to live that's anywhere near the districts where they teach. While teacher salaries in California are among the lowest in the country, the cost of housing here is one of the highest. Here's a look at a San Francisco startup that's helping Bay Area teachers buy homes where they work.

In the San Francisco metro area (which includes San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin counties), the situation is similar. The average buyer must set aside 180 percent of annual income to come up with 20 percent down. The median income is $91,777; the median 20 percent down payment is $164,920; and the median home value is $824,600.

In the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metro area, buyers need to make over $330,000 a year to afford a median single-family home price of $1.9 million, a whopping 29% increase in needed salary from last year, according to the report. But the median annual household income in the city of San Jose was only about $117,000 in 2020, according to census data.

After San Jose and San Francisco, the metro areas with the highest needed homebuyer salaries include San Diego ($167,000), Los Angeles ($149,000), Seattle ($141,000), Boston ($130,000) and New York ($129,000).

During the pandemic, many Bay Area residents fled to more affordable locales where home prices are cheaper. The report found necessary homebuyer salaries in some of those areas are $115,000 in Austin, Texas; $109,000 in Portland, Oregon; $104,000 in Miami; and $84,000 in Las Vegas.

SFO is served by a number of taxi and limousine companies. Taxis depart from roadway islands on the lower level outside the Arrivals/Baggage Claims area in all terminals. Uniformed taxi coordinators work from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m. to ensure a smooth process for travelers. All cabs are metered. The travel time to popular drop-off points in downtown San Francisco is usually around 30 minutes (depending on traffic) and fares range from $45-60.

Smartphone app-based transportation services like Lyft and Uber serve OAK, providing rides via drivers in their personal, non-commercial vehicles. Arrange your ride via the app, and then follow the signs for Smartphone App Rides in Terminals 1 and 2. Drivers wait for passengers on the second curb of the pickup area. Fares and travel times vary according to demand and local traffic, but a typical ride from OAK to San Francisco takes approximately 45 minutes and ranges in price from $30-45.

Caltrain fares are based on the number of zones that are partially or wholly traveled through by the passenger. There are two Caltrain stops in San Francisco: 22nd Street and Fourth Street. Both are in Zone 1. Allow a minimum of 60 minutes to arrive in San Francisco. Occasionally, the trip might take longer.

There are a few on-demand car services to choose from, most of them started by San Francisco locals. You must first download the app, register, and set up a credit card payment system to use them. To use these services, set a pick-up location and destination in the app. Within minutes, you will be matched with a driver. Make sure to communicate with your driver; call, text, or wave down their car and always confirm that you are getting in the correct vehicle.

Across the city, there are 5,500 scooters provided by three different licensed (Lime, Spin, and Scoot). Download any one of their apps to your phone to search for available motorized scooters nearby and enjoy a fun and scenic ride between your destinations.

A ferry ride on the bay is a fun way to travel beyond San Francisco -- enjoy lunch on the water in Sausalito (there's shopping, too) or visit the quaint town of Tiburon with scenic views of the city. The Golden Gate Ferry will take you to Angel Island State Park, Larkspur, Sausalito, and Tiburon to the north and all Golden Gate ferries depart from Gate B at the north side of the Ferry Building. Don't miss the Giants Ferry to Oracle Park or the Warriors Ferry to the Chase Center!

The San Francisco Bay Ferry can take you to Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, Treasure Island, and Vallejo to the east and they operate out of the three gates south of the Ferry Building. There are several ways to pay - by Clipper Card, San Francisco Bay Ferry mobile app, paper ticket, at the ferry ticket office, or onboard most ferries with cash or credit card. There's even room for bikes on the ferries (space available).

Like any big city, San Francisco has to deal with issues like vandalism and theft. If you plan on renting a car, please note wherever you park your car, no matter the time of day or night, be sure to take all valuables with you. If you love it, don't leave it.

Antelope Valley residents can claim a $500 incentive for the purchase of any make & model battery-electric plug-in vehicle purchased only from Antelope Valley Dealerships (out-of-area purchases are ineligible.)

Customers can receive an additional $250 bonus rebate (up to $500) if they purchase or lease an EV from a Pasadena auto dealer. Note: Since Tesla relies on a direct-sale business model where the transaction is completed entirely online, the Pasadena auto dealer bonus will not apply.

Residential customers can get rebates of up to $1,250 with an electric panel upgrade. Customers living in a Disadvantaged Community (DAC) area of Burbank can qualify for increased rebate amounts of up to $1,500 with an electric panel upgrade.

There is no additional cost to utilize EV chargers when parked in a City-owned parking facility, with the exception of the Sacramento Valley Station (Lot 293) where payment for both parking and charger access is required. Electric vehicles parked on the street are still subject to posted parking regulations, including payment of meter fees.

However, when 30 Year Fixed Rate Mortgages became the standard, job mobility was not really a thing. People tended to join a company like AT&T and stay there for the next 30-40 years. They would stay in the same home as well.

The Ohlone have always known what many of us have more recently come to understand: the Bay is a special place. The moderate climate, the natural beauty, the ecological and cultural diversity are just a few of the many qualities of life here that we love. The Shuumi Land Tax is about repairing our broken relationships with each other and the land we live on.

Bay Area home values are falling, and are expected to fall further in the next year after reaching new heights in spring 2022. San Francisco home prices will tumble further than any other U.S. metro area next year, according to Zillow.

A state budget deficit could weaken investments in housing in other areas, some planners worry: Critical social safety net programs to keep residents out of homelessness rely on state money, too. Social programs are what state Sen. Scott Wiener says he is most focused on when advocating for San Francisco in the state budget process early next year. 041b061a72
